Here are some of the animals that are extinct:
- Dodo - The Dodo is a bird that couldn't fly. It became extinct in the late 17th century. This bird had a unique shape with a very big, round beak and a very solid build-which allowed them to withstand the cold climate they lived in. 3 4
- Passenger Pigeon - This bird was very common in North America, it was so common there was over millions even billions of them at one stage. One of the most amazing things about the Passenger Pigeon is that they flew in massive packs and would make the sky go black for stages. The pigeon is a pinkish colour with a silver beak. It was quite astonishing that such a large number of birds died out. 7 8
- Great Auk - The Great Auk was a very large bird that looked a lot like a penguin without the fins. These birds who could not fly, lived mainly in the Northern Atlantic. However, this bird was black and white, and like the Dodo it had a very rounded beak. The Great Auk was also part of the Pinguinus species (a type of bird). The main reasons for the bird's extinction was that hunters desired their meat and skin for the good of their family's health, not to mention the oil that came from their bodies. It became extinct in about the 19th century. 9 10
- Tasmanian Tiger Wolf - An animal that was shaped like a wolf, but had stripes going up its back. The wolf was a Marsupial and it had a pouch that would hold the newborn-just like the kangaroo. In the main land the Tasmanian Tiger Wolf could not compete for food, due to the fact that the dingo's would eat it all. The wolf's then moved down to Tasmania, however then the first Europeans came, and they didn't stand a chance. 11
- Saber-toothed Tiger - The Saber-Tooth Tiger was a prehistoric animal that had big fangs and looked like a tiger however, it was actually not related to the modern day tigers we know. The Saber-Tooth Tiger is one of the most well known prehistoric animals along-side the big Woolly Mammoths. It was also a great hunter due to it's massive fangs that could kill an enemy in matter of bites. 12
- Quagga - The Quagga was a zebra species that played a big role in English zoos. Its main habitat was the vast, grassy plains of South Africa where it could chew away at the long grass. However, South Africa was not such a great place for the Quagga due to the farmers, who soon started to hunt for their meat and skin, which resulted in the extinction of the animal. 13
